Unique Portland Maine Night Life Venue

Unique Portland Maine Night Life Venue

The month of October wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a swanky, spooky club in the heart of Portland, one of Maine’s trendiest cities. Bubba’s Sulky Lounge is a popular dance club, well known for its Friday night 80’s theme. While the promise of a flashback to the 80’s might be a driving force for people of all ages to make their way to the club, it could be Bubba’s décor that equally draws a crowd. After stepping into the club’s interior, I was greeted to a large round bar and spacious room. I took note of the pool tables and perfectly situated tables. But what really caught my attention were the plethora of antiques, cobwebs, mannequins, and life-sized monsters and beasts that occupied all corners and walls of the room. It was like the club was placed within R. L. Stine’s neglected attic.

Further into the club was another room that sported a dance floor that slowly changed colors, from red to blue. The bizarre décor continued through this room to the last room which was reserved for private parties. Luckily for me, I had been invited to a family member’s 30th birthday party so I had the privilege of experiencing the reserved space. This section of the club was a replica of the rest of the club, just slightly smaller. While Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” crooned over the room’s speakers, I explored the many nuances of the room, taking note of the antique bicycles wrapped in cobwebs, the faded vintage characters of Snap, Crackle, and Pop hanging on the wall by the dance floor, and the life-sized werewolf guarding the entrance to a small nook. The nook housed the prone figures of mannequins and various items.

The bar was long and lit by lights shaped like antique gas lamps hanging overhead. At the end of the bar were dusty, vintage typewriters. I could just imagine someone sitting at one of these typewriters and using it to write a horror story based off the club’s environment. To say Bubba’s Sulky Lounge is one of the most unique night club’s I have ever been to would be accurate. The clash of vintage and antique décor coupled with the spooky accents of cobwebs, mannequins, and characters popular in modern and past horror stories and films provided a considerably unique environment. The mix of modern and 80’s attired club goers also provided a unique element to the club.

If you’re looking for something different, unique, and trendy, and are also in the mood to get down to some of the best hits from the 80’s, I would suggest checking out Bubba’s Sulky Lounge in Portland, Maine. I will warn you, however, that the drink prices are reflective of the slightly more expensive atmosphere of Portland. I would suggest making sure to come prepared to spend a pretty penny or two on alcoholic beverages.

Give Bubba’s Sulky Lounge a visit some Friday night and I promise you won’t be disappointed!

A new dark romance from New York Times bestseller Anna Zaires

He came to me in the night, a cruel, darkly handsome stranger from the most dangerous corners of Russia. He tormented me and destroyed me, ripping apart my world in his quest for vengeance.

Now he's back, but he’s no longer after my secrets.

The man who stars in my nightmares wants me.

Tormentor Mine by Anna Zaires

Tormentor Mine by Anna Zaires

Tormentor Mine is the first book in a series by New York Times bestselling author Anna Zaires. I will warn you that there are some situations in the book that might be somewhat disturbing to some. For example, you will often ask yourself as you read through whether the heroine, Sara, truly cares for the love interest Peter because of the way he “takes care of her” or because she might be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. To be honest, by the end of the novel I wasn’t quite sure myself.

The story starts off with Peter’s quest for vengeance. Sara happened to be an innocent bystander who had the misfortune of being married to a man Peter is determined to kill. Peter attacks Sara in her home and basically tortures the information of her husband’s whereabouts from her. The methods he used to extract this information is reflective of his experiences working in Russia’s special forces. I found myself outraged and horrified for her. I don’t blame her for unwittingly disclosing the information (he did waterboard her, tie her to a chair, and then drug her after all) which resulted in the death of her husband. We do later learn of Sara’s now deceased husband’s actions which led to Peter’s vengeance.

This is the first romance novel I have read where the heroine suffers from PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks due to the harrowing actions of the love interest. After attacking Sara, Peter finds himself thinking of her. He then decides it would be a great idea to set cameras up all over her house and have people follow her every move. His interest slowly grows into obsession, until finally he decides to play house with Sara. Peter forces Sara to endure his presence, despite her knowing he had tortured her and killed her husband (which she suffers a tremendous amount of guilt for).

This story is seriously unconventional and if you’re not into the whole stalking, obsessing, torture, or psychological, and seriously twisted form of “love” found in this novel, then it might not be for you. However, if you’re wanting to read something completely different from the mainstream love story, then this one will be perfect for you. I will admit to being intrigued by the concept, shocked by the situations presented in the story, and intrigued by both the main characters. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be in Sara’s situation. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be loved by someone as intense, dominant, and somewhat scary like Peter.

Finally, Tormentor Mine was well written and the characters provided enough depth that you enjoyed getting into their heads a little. Anna Zaires certainly knows how to leave the reader gasping at the cliffhanger! Ah! Now I’m going to have to pre-order the next one so I can see where the hell Sara is being taken now. The second novel in the Tormentor Mine series, Obsession Mine, is scheduled to be released on November 14th, 2017.

Intuitive Paint Night at The Belfast Breeze Inn

Intuitive Paint Night at The Belfast Breeze Inn

    paintnight

Paint Night painting by April Hughes

October is the month of All Hallows Eve, and as such, I like to honor the spookiest month of the year by trying unique and spooky experiences. On October 4th I attended an Intuitive Paint Night with psychic Angie Butler Welch at the picturesque Belfast Breeze Inn. The Belfast Breeze Inn is located in the coastal town of Belfast, Maine. The Inn, boasting lodge rooms, a lounge, and restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Upon entering the Inn’s foyer, I was kindly greeted and ushered to a moderately sized kitchen in the back where paint night guests were situated on each side of a long kitchen table. Prior to entering the kitchen, I noted the Victorian-like atmosphere of the common rooms, presumably the lounge. I found the clean, Victorian-era décor rather appropriate for an intuitive paint night led by a locally known psychic.

We were served gnocchi with a tomato sauce and a side of garlic bread, a dish of beets, and pesto to garnish our bread with. Glasses of ice water were also distributed. I was offered wine and I gladly accepted. The white wine was crisp, cold, and refreshing which paired nicely with the dish. The conversation was lively and I found that almost everyone was interested in learning how their paintings will reflect their lives, passions, and inner turmoil. Dinner concluded with an assortment of cheesecakes to choose from. I went with the classic plain cheesecake. Delicious!

Dinner was served from 5:30 to 6:00. At 6:00 we were kindly ushered to the restaurant part of the Inn where small, round tables were either pushed side-by-side to allow two tabletop easels, or left in a row for single easels. I quickly nabbed a spot located in the back where the window offered the best view of the ocean. My best friend, Catherine, quickly took the spot next to me and immediately launched into her skepticism of her personal skills with painting. You see, Catherine is a talented photographer, she has a way of capturing images with such clear, obvious mastery, however, tossing paint onto a blank canvas in not included in her arsenal of talents. I was quick to agree, both on her behalf and mine. If we were going to botch the image of a raven sitting on a branch in moonlight, we were going to do it together.

After taking a steadying sip of wine (which I pushed far from my easel as I have, in the past, nearly swirled my paintbrush in my wine thinking it was the water cup), I swirled my paintbrush into the black and white acrylic paint to produce a dove gray. Angie, the paint instructor and psychic, assured us in the beginning that her painting example did not have to be followed closely. We were encouraged to use the colors we wished to use as these will help her gauge what we are spiritually receiving from within ourselves and beyond. As I gazed around me, I noticed people throwing bright reds and oranges around their moons, even some greens, blues, and purples. Within this kaleidoscope of color, I looked down at my own palette. I had the ominous tons of white, gray, black, and dark brown.

Gazing at my blank canvas, I slowly set my paintbrush against its stark surface and began creating my night sky. The moon was a light gray, so light that it was nearly white, but as I moved my brush towards the edges it quickly darkened from a sooty gray to a compelling ebony. To my right, Catherine shot questions off to the instructor, her desire to create the image as instructed was evident, her anxiety at possibly failing was also clear. However, as I gazed at her painting, I couldn’t help but admire the bold tones of yellow and purple. Her painting was as bold and stark as her personality. I loved it.

In the end, my painting was dark and mysterious. I had added a single red-toned leaf on the branch my black raven perched upon. Angie sauntered over and gazed closely at my painting. While I saw an Edgar Allen Poe-ish feel picture, Angie saw something different. According to Angie the single red leaf was a reminder to hold on to my passions, and the colors were protections. My raven represented a need to have time for myself and to focus on my own needs. This I could understand. It can be trying at times being a mother to two young children, a wife, a friend, and try to maintain a full-time job and attend classes (I’m currently in a Master’s program), as well as maintain my household. Finding time to myself can be difficult.

At the end of the evening we stood as a group to take a photo, which Angie has displayed on her Facebook page. As I stared at that photo I was interested how a group of people could interpret a single photo in a myriad of different ways. It just goes to show how unique everyone is, and how different their lives are. We all have different passions, trials, and tribulations. We’re all fighting our own battles, finding ways around our own hurdles, and celebrating our own successes and victories.

The Intuitive Paint Night with Angie Butler Welch was an experience success. It was decently priced at 35.00 which included the paint night, reading, and dinner and dessert (wine was additional). If you’re looking for a unique experience in a warm and welcoming locale with a wicked good price, I highly suggest checking out the Belfast Breeze Inn website and Facebook page today and make an Intuitive Paint Night reservation!

    Paper Princess Review

Paper Princess is the first book in the Royals Series written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Erin Watt. The story follows Ella Harper- a high school junior trying to make ends meet, under the radar, after the death of her mother. Ella eventually finds herself plucked out of one of the lowest moments of her young life by Callum Royal, an obscenely wealthy man determined to take care of her like one of his own. It’s in his home that Ella finds herself having to contend with Callum’s five sons. It is evident by their chilly first meeting, that this new golden life is going to be fraught with its own challenges.

Reed Royal, the second oldest son, makes you love him and hate him consistently throughout the book. Just when you think he’s making a turning point in his negative regard for Ella, he surprises you with another example of how douche-like he can be. Reed isn’t the only one targeting Ella in nasty ways, he has help from one particularly brutal girl at their high school. Ella is caught in the midst of trying to make a life for herself, adapting to this new environment, and having to suffer betrayal, bullying, and romantic interest all at the same time.

    It’s a wicked combination.

I’m going to admit, I finished the book all in one sitting. I literally could not put it down. I found myself equally obsessed with the Royals, needing to see what devious tricks they had up their sleeves. The adults in the story were equally as deceptive as the teens. The story was one wicked moment after the other…and that chemistry between Reed and Ella? Well. Who would have that that two people so determined to make one another so miserable would provide such a concoction of passion, need, and want.

Both characters are strongly developed and just sizzle with chemistry on the pages. The Predator exudes dominance and strength, which is just what Sia needs in order to face a past she has been trying so hard to move on from and is failing at.
